The Most Ridiculous Laws You Can Be Charged With

Posted on

Some laws make sense, such as the prohibition of vandalism. Damaging the property of another is a clear violation of the individual's property rights. However, there are other crimes that do not seem to make sense, but you can still be charged with a felony if you commit them.

Improperly Using a Website

Violating the terms of service for a website can lead to you being charged with a felony. Some websites forbid minors from using their services. Other websites do not allow you to let anyone else use your account. Unfortunately, these rules can be changed on a whim and violating them will make you guilty of violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act or the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Releasing Balloons

Some laws that seem sensible can be used incorrectly to charge someone with a felony. For example, a man released a dozen balloons in a state park and was charged with polluting to harm animals, plants, and humans. When you are on public property, especially a state park, be aware that there are often additional laws you will need to brush up on.

Using Computers or Smartphones in Florida

Sometimes, a law that is well-intentioned is poorly worded in such a manner that it bans something that the legislators likely didn't intend. For instance, Florida passed a bill that outlawed Internet cafes and the wording of the legislation was so poor that they also banned all computers and smartphones in Florida.

Owning Too Many Cats in Kansas

It can be very easy to violate a law you may have never heard of. For example, if you move to Kansas with your five cats, you will be breaking the law by owning too many furry companions. The purpose of the law was to attempt to reduce the number of homeless cats. The theory was that homeowners would neuter or spay their cats more often so they did not exceed the legal limit. By having more neutered or spayed cats, fewer cats would be released into the wild.

Fighting a Ridiculous Law

If you are charged with a crime you would have never expected, you should consider contacting a criminal lawyer. Intent is a major part of the law and if you can prove that you didn't intend to commit a particular crime, you may be able to have the charges dropped. Fortunately, these laws are often modified after legislators realize the impracticality of them.
