Want To Become a Corporate Lawyer? What You Need to Know

Posted on

If you currently work in the corporate industry or if it has always just been something that interests you, then you may want to take your involvement to the next level and study corporate law. But, if this is just an idea that you are dabbling with and one that you haven't looked much into, then there may be a few things that you need to know more about. Before you take the next steps to become a corporate lawyer, this article will discuss a few things for you to know.

You Need to Go to Law School

Just like with any sort of law degree, you have to go to law school in order to become a corporate lawyer. Even though you may spend your third year of law school placing more of an emphasis on corporate law than other types of law, you don't have to specialize in it because there really is no such thing during law school. You can, however, do a joint masters of business administration (MBA) with a law degree so that you can learn more about the business side of things. If this sort of joint program sounds like something that you are interested in, make sure to only apply to universities that offer it.

You May Have to Start out Small

Another thing to know about becoming a corporate lawyer is that although you may want to work for a large private firm one day, in order to get there you have to climb the "corporate ladder" so to speak. Similar to most other professional fields, corporate law firms don't typically hire a partner right out of law school. Some companies, like Carter and West Law Firm, know that they make 1st year, 2nd year, and even 3rd year attorneys start out taking care of smaller cases and then they make them work their way up. Just remember that much like anything, it will take time for you to work up to where you want to go.

Your Connections Count

If you really want to be successful in the corporate law world, you need to make sure that you are making the proper connections. For instance, if you are already working with a corporate firm, then make sure that you continue to be in their good graces.

These are just a few basic things to know about the corproate law if you want to pursue it futher. To learn more, contact a law school nearest to you.
